It’s the Little Things
Walking my dog Taz this morning, I passed a mom and son waiting for the school bus. As we slowly trotted past, I overheard the boy, I’m guessing about nine years old, regaling all the fascinating intricacies of the silk worm. Mom listened intently as he displayed his prowess in all things silk-worm-esque. As he finished she smiled and said “I think you’ll do fine on your test today.” His little face beamed as he grinned back. When you reach your perch in the middle-aged cheap seats, you are … [Read more...]
The Erma Zone
You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead. Your next stop: The Erma Zone. On New Year’s Day, son Jimmy threw down this gauntlet: Mom, what are YOU going to do this year to get out of YOUR comfort zone? He was just off to graduate school and I had asked him this same question. FYI, you are an official occupant of the middle-aged … [Read more...]
Is Bigger ALWAYS Better?
It used to be true that bigger was considered better. Big bank accounts, big cars, big houses were the battle cry. The pendulum seems to now be swinging back the other way. Financial independence is great, and being poor is no picnic, but the excessive wealth and greed of the 80’s and 90’s (see “Wolf of Wall Street”) is making way for a generation who doesn’t necessarily aspire to be part of the 1%. Gas-guzzling Hummers and SUVs are transitioning into fuel-efficient hybrids. McMansions have … [Read more...]
You Chose Wisely
Last week I attended one of my favorite charity events: The 47th Annual Patrons’ Show Fundraiser for The Art League. The Art League is a wonderful charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to develop the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community. Courtesy of the Art League I love the design of the Patrons’ Show; it seems very democratic. Almost 700 people purchase … [Read more...]
Why I Love Millennials
**Updated from original posting on February 14, 2012** Observing our world from the middle-aged cheap seats, I can recite a litany of reasons to not love what I see. School shootings, freak and destructive storms, crazy political rancor – it can all make a gal a little despondent. However, in the spirit of this upcoming Valentine's Day, I would like to instead share that hope - and youth - springs eternal and is most certainly thriving in a place called State College, PA. This month … [Read more...]
7th Sign of the Apocalypse
“Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together... mass hysteria!” Movie, please? That’s right, the great Bill Murray aka Dr. Peter Venkman, in that cinematic masterpiece: Ghostbusters. Why yes, Dr. Venkman, it could have been the end of the world, but a year later we’re still here, and we’ve morphed into dogs and cats peacefully cohabitating. Who knew? I am not a cat person – my friends and family know this. I have been a solid member of “Team Canine” all of my life. Yet, it’s been … [Read more...]
And The Winner Is
Tis the season. Not the holiday season; not baseball season. The season; movie award season. http://flic.kr/p/8D9j2S Hello, my name is Kim, and I'm a movie award show junkie. Hello Kim! I know, I know, this flies in the face of what I should care about; like global warming or world hunger (both important issues, BTW). However, if I’m but one thing up here in the middle-aged cheap seats, it’s honest. And, I honestly love to watch the annual award shows. First up are the Golden Globes (my … [Read more...]
Irish Blessings
This week a beloved Aunt left this world. She had recently celebrated her 80th birthday and had become a great grandmother. She will be missed. In her memory and as we turn into 2014, I wish each of you the blessings of a new year, new starts, and new opportunities. An Irish Blessing http://goo.gl/pRFmfv Happy (and safe) New Year, Kimba … [Read more...]
Therefore Be It Resolved
RESOLUTION WHEREAS Kimba usually dislikes New Year’s resolutions, but is willing to give it one more shot; and WHEREAS Kimba was pretty happy with how 2013 turned out and wants to hedge her bets for a stellar 2014; and WHEREAS Kimba is a Virgo, and this just seems to be a fancy way to make a to-do list; which is fine by her. http://www.morguefile.com/archive/display/734782 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this crazy southern Irish gal – also known as Kimba – hereby: Vows to … [Read more...]
