A Blog By Any Other Name

January 25, 2013 by Kim Dalferes

As hard as it is to believe, this coming week marks the one year anniversary of my blog launch.

YEA! Happy Anniversary!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has followed and encouraged me, commented, and provided wonderful feedback.

When I began this journey, I had NO idea what to expect. Would I be able to find something interesting to write about on a regular basis? Would anyone stop by, read, and maybe even leave a comment? Would the blog become a giant time-suck and get in the way of: my job; my writing; my marriage; or my growing fondness of naptime (not necessarily in that order)?

I had made a one-year commitment, and based in part on a few “Aha” moments along the way, I’ve decided to keep blogging through 2013. Some of my favorite revelations have been:

  • I’ve been surprised that I don’t blog very often about my book , even if I do weave it in every now and then, like just now….
  • I’ve also been surprised that I have been able to find something to write about each month, and blogging has been something that I have looked forward to – it has not yet become a chore.

  • Illustrations, top ten lists, and quick references resonate with readers.
  • I don’t have to be brilliant every post, but I should create posts that are colorful, easy to read, and provide a little value or perhaps advice.
  • There were blog topics that were more popular than others. Your favorites included:

In Search of Angry White Male  This post definitely hit a nerve right after the election.

Three Little Words This post, dedicated to why I miss Florida, had many of you waxing poetic about where you grew up.

There Once Was a Girl From the South  Apparently we have quite a few poets amongst us. I may have to think about a Haiku challenge for 2013.

Along the way I’ve connected with some wonderful groups:

  • The Women of Facebook
  • Celebrating Authors
  • The Indie Exchange (TIE)

In particular, two terrific women bloggers who have provided lots of fun and support are:

  • Megan Blogs
  • Peace From Pieces

I hope you’ll visit all of them – tell them Kimba sent you.

Overall, this blog seems to be humming along just fine, so there won’t be many tweaks or changes for 2013 (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it mantra). There is one minor change we have just implemented: the blog is now titled “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats.” What do you think? Do you believe this is an accurate depiction of the types of topics I usually discuss?

Are there any particular topics that you would like to see us discuss in 2013? Do you like the new blog title? Please leave your ideas in the comments section below.

Cheers and I hope 2013 is as much fun for us as this past year has been,

Kimba

Another fun post giving us a glimpse into who you are. I love that and I need to do that more often myself.  I haven't blogged for a couple of months, thought of many good ones and didn't write them down.  I say follow your heart. You'll know what to write. Your soul will tell you!

Congratulations!  I really believe it takes a special something to be engaged with our message regularly, whether we have no readers, 10 readers, or a million readers.  The ratings are really insignificant compared to whether it brings us joy or not.  I choose to only blog or vlog (I do more videos than writing) when I am inspired to do so.  I love your enthusiasm and energy to make the internet a more valuable place to be.

Thx as always for the encouragement Suzanne.  I'm not so sure I'm contributing to the Internet being more valuable, but I hope maybe it's at least a little bit funnier!

Congratulations Kimba on your 1 year anniversary!  I so related to your wondering if you would have enough to write about.  Somehow it just comes to you doesn't it.  I am going on my 4th month of blogging so it is all pretty new to me.  I have enjoyed getting to know you through The Women of Facebook group and reading your blogs.  They always bring a smile to my face.

Hello!

Author photo #2 in colorI hope you enjoy your time here and that you come back often. Wondering what makes me tick? This favorite quote from one of the grand dames of writing, Erma Bombeck, might help: Hook 'em with the lead. Hold 'em with laughter. Exit with a quip they won't forget. This seems to be a good overall life goal, don’t you think?

Kim Dalferes’ Latest Book…

Crazy Southern Irish Gal Two-Book Bundle

Humor writer Kimberly “Kimba” Dalferes dishes on a wide variety of topics–from days of her youth spent blissfully on the shores of Florida’s beaches to menopause and empty nests–in her nonfiction collection Crazy Southern Irish Gal Two-Book Bundle. In both titles: I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties, Dalferes’ crazy Southern Irish gal perspective inspires her illustrations of life’s quirky twists and turns. Together, these books offer descriptive and colorful essays on subjects such as getting a tattoo in midlife, unique uses for kitty litter, handling a rabid bat, public speaking gone wrong, and naked hot-tubbing in Vegas. Dalferes skillfully weaves what at first glance may appear to be dissimilar themes into a tapestry that invokes her life’s motto: live out loud, laugh often, and ‘occasionally’ drink tequila. Now available through Amazon Kindle.
