Don’t Let the Door Hit Ya on the Way Out

I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions. It’s all about the new and improved, as if to say that everything we did this past year was old and lousy?! Hey, I get wanting a do-over, especially after 2016 which has been a doozy of a ballbuster year. However, perhaps we should focus on welcoming the New Year with a toast, a smile, and a big ‘ol let’s keep on keepin’ on.

Have you ever wondered how the tradition of toasting came about? The exact beginnings of the practice of the toast are unknown; seems we humans have been drinking to each other’s health and merriment for centuries. However, the origin of the phrase “to toast” seems to have been derived from the 16th century custom of placing a piece of toast in a container of wine to soak up some of the acidity (read more about the history of toasting here: http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2013/05/the-origin-of-toasting-drinks/ ). Thus we have this famous Shakespearian quote:

I keep a repertoire of toasts handy for occasions, such a New Year’s, when I might be called upon to offer up a celebratory shout out or musing. Here are a few of my faves.
